What Are You?

Too many agents fail for one simple reason; they don’t know what they are.  If an agent does not know what they are they have a hard time succeeding in this business.  They also have a hard time marketing, getting in front of people, and keeping their pipeline full.  But the biggest indicator that an agent doesn’t know what they are is when. . .

. . .they tell me that if they could just find a lead program to get them in front of people that they could make sales all day long. This statement shows me that you want to be an order taker, not a business owner.  What’s the difference?  An order taker will need a job in year or even couple of months, and a business owner will create a business that will last and be prosperous for them.

Here is the crux of being an independent insurance agent.  You are not in the business of selling insurance.  You are in the business of building a business.  Think of it this way:

401(k)’s and FIA’s (well  kind of)

Time Magazine and the Wharton School of Business both have articles that can help you increase your sales, teach your clients and help them to see the power of FIA.  All you need to do is. . .

Download them, read them, and use the info to help your prospects and clients.

The first article is Time Magazines October 19th issue and Cover story, “Why it’s Time to Retire the 401(k).”  This article, in and of itself is not useful outside of the fact that it scares all hope out of the reader in how the 401(k) has failed to meet any of the original objectives.  However, the author then turns his attention to an idea you should all be comfortable with; insuring your retirement.  Although he is talking hypothetically, you can do it for real.

The article gets good in the last eight paragraphs.

Activity, ANY Activity = Success

In these tough economic times, your business should be flourishing!  Your days should be filled with 401k rollovers, moving IRA’s and Retirement Savings to ‘safe money places.’ If you are not having this type of success you are missing the boat.  The best way to get this business. . .

The best way to get this business is to OPEN YOUR MOUTH!  You are the best marketing machine you have and when you stay silent, the people around you, who want your help and desperately need it struggle needlessly.  In the spring of 2002, I was at a party talking with a long time friend.  In causal discussion I mentioned that I was helping people move their money to safer places that still had good growth opportunities.  He actually got quite angry at me for not telling him sooner.  He had been struggling with that to do with his money for months.  After helping him, he referred me to a dozen other people.  From that one time, opening my mouth, I made over $100k.

Here are some other ideas that will help you increase your business this summer.

1.        Take the Step Program and use the letter writing marketing strategy.  More than ever people are willing to listen and the letters are a perfect application to get in front of them.  Make it a goal to write at least 100 of them and watch your business grow.

2.       Use any of the Power Ad programs.  We have seen record numbers of appointments from this program.  If you are worth your salt as a salesman, you should be able to turn most of them into sales.

3.       Try one of the Marketing programs that are being tested by our agents.  We are seeing success from all types of activity.  What does this mean?  If you are not succeeding, you are not doing enough ‘activity.’  Put some money into your business, purchase marketing, and get to work.  Now is the time to succeed.
